However on this ocasion we hand the reigns to one of our resident short course specialists, Rose Beddington, for the trials and tribulations of the Tonbridge Triathlon!\u003c/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\u0022color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\u0022\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\u0022color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\u0022\u003eHaving withdrawn from the Eton Dorney Tri on Saturday 4th May because of the temperature of both air and water, I decided to join my GB Age Group team mate Annie Sidgewick for the Tonbridge triathlon which is pool based. This was in preparation for Barry Island European qualifier on May 26th. It rained on Sunday night and continued to rain on Monday, only stopping intermittently for a few minutes all day. The venue is Tonbridge School with smart facilities of a sports complex including pool and manicured playing fields. The event is run by Tonbridge Lions who were extremely helpful.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Having registered in the heated pool complex, we racked our bikes in the rain, attended the briefing at the pool side and started the swim in a friendly atmosphere. Quite a long run to T1 and a struggle to change into soggy bike shoes etc. At the briefing we were told the bike course has 16K of hill out of the 23K. Annie had told me about Shibourne Hill but I had not realised how much else was hilly. I can do hills but it was not knowing how much longer they are going on for ….so the lesson is, recce the course if you don’t know it. I had intended to do this but it meant another long drive from Annie’s house the night before. Also, in the rain do you wear sunglasses? I didn’t but began to feel strange from constant blinking against the driving rain…\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\u0022color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\u0022\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAbout half way up the hills, cold set in so I couldn’t change gear with my left hand when I needed to. Well placed marshals at strategic points cheered us on. Annie had to stop with a nasty noise coming from a brake, but with help from a marshal she continued. Along the relatively flat top of the ride there were other competitors going slow for a bit of a rest and a drink. The first down is very steep and narrow and then it flattens out towards the town where you meet traffic on a piece of road that seemed to consist entirely of pot holes and poor repairs. It was a relief to have survived the trickiest part of the race but I took far to long in T2 with frozen hands and body, trying to put on soaked trainers which squirted jets of water as I struggled in frustration. For the first time I was actually pleased to be running, particularly on the manicured playing fields and feeling a little warmth seeping back in to my body. It was a tale of survival, finishing on the smart school running track in front of the sports complex. Now I know how the course works I would do it again, so that is the lesson for me, plus allowing time to put on a jacket or top in foul weather.
