And there are many ways to tell that in the world around us! The nights are getting longer, the birds are back singing in the trees, and in the world of multisport the Duathletes are emerging from hibernation! You might notice a theme over the next few race reports, but for this weeks we hand over to Mark Poole, who decided to dive in at the deep end, taking on a qualifier, at one of his first duathlons at Castle Coombe! Oh and did we mention it was draft legal to boot?! Let the games begin!\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\u0022color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\u0022\u003eYou only wake up at 4am on a dark, damp Sunday morning if you\u0027re a triathlete. Thankfully, there was no swim as I was off to have a crack at the Chilly Sprint Duathlon at the Castle Coombe race track. My first draft-legal race and a 2025 European Championship Qualifying Event to boot, as I wanted to see how I stacked up.\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\u0022color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\u0022\u003eBut I was not off to a good start. On the way there, someone had managed to crash (on an empty road with literally no cars around) and block the road. On doing a u-turn and taking a route to get around the crash, I was then blocked by a road closure so that SSE could do some digging. Thankfully I had added some contingency, so made it to the race venue on time, but with nerves slightly frazzled and having had to skip my planned stop for much needed coffee.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\u0022color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\u0022\u003eThankfully registration and racking was quick. As I was orienting myself in transition, some guy was doing a full-on practice run, sprinting from the run-in arch to his bike, putting his helmet on, taking his bike and sprinting to the bike out. I thought that was a bit keen, but he ended up winning the event overall, so maybe that is what it takes!\u003cbr\u003eAt the race briefing we were told it was 7 laps for the bike (20km) and you were responsible for counting your own laps. Not too difficult, but 6 people managed to fail at this and got DQ\u0027d.\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\u0022color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\u0022\u003eThen to the start line, where I found myself surrounded by youngsters in GBR tri-suits proclaiming \u0022South Centr\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\u0022color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\u0022\u003eal Academy\u0022 and the like. Looking around, I could see some other old men, which put my mind at ease.\u003cbr\u003eThen we were off for the first 5km run, which was a short out and back and then one lap of the circuit. This was ferociously quick and the field stretched and splintered within the first kilometre.\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\u0022color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\u0022\u003eMy T1 was a disaster. Too much faffing, managed to kick my cycling shoe over and then on trying to turn my race belt so the number was at the rear for the bike, managed to rip the number out of one the securing points. I thought the race belt had come undone and it took me a while to realise what had happened. In the stress I went to mount the bike before the mount line but thankfully a marshall shouted at me to save me a DQ. Should have practiced like the winner...\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\u0022color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\u0022\u003eWith it being draft legal, you are looking to get into a strong bike group, which is largely defined by your first run split. It took a couple of laps for a group of about 6 of us to form. It was great fun on a traffic-free course, but unfortunately only 3 of us wanted to work and at one point I inadvertently gapped the group on a false flat which was frustrating. But then a faster group came by and so I jumped on the back of that and sat on for the last 1.5 laps to save some legs for the final 3km run.\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\u0022color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\u0022\u003eT2 was much smoother. The last run was hard, on the perimeter track which was a mixed surface and lumpy. But it was soon over and time for coffee and cake!\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\u0022color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\u0022\u003eI finished 8th In my AG and only the top 4 auto-qualify. Technically, I am in with a chance of a place as I finished within 120% of the winners time and there are 8 extra places available across 3 events (if I understand it correctly), but this is unlikely given my position. Still, it was a good learning experience - the main takeaway being that I am not nearly a fast enough runner!\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\u0022color: rgb(255, 255,
