The last time I (Josh) touched base personally was with an update on the build up and thought process behind training for T100 Dubai, and now, it's time to reveal how it went! All roads this season, led to this!

Introduction

So first perhaps a bit of background to set the scene. For those not in the know, the T100 World Tour is a new Middle Distance race series for the 2024 season. It involves a partnership between World Triathlon (governing body for Olympic/short course triathlon) and the Professional Triathletes Organisation (Long Course Athletes Union) and is roughly analogous to Ironman 70.3, albeit raced over the 100 km distance (2 km swim, 80 km bike, 18 km run). Races take place all over the world from San Francisco, to Singapore, via London, Las Vegas and finishing out with the Grand Final in the deserts of Dubai! Alongside the elite series, where you can see the likes of Taylor Knibb, Ashleigh Gentle, Alistair Brownlee and Marten Van Riel battling it out, there's also an age group element too! Which I guess is where I come in, still riding the high of a European Aquabike AG title and not quite sure what the next challenge for the season is likely to be. I mean, how hard could it be to step back in to the world of middle distance tri for the first time since 2017? I've got family in Dubai so why not step out of the comfort zone and try a new challenge? Op's my finger seems to have slipped, what on earth have I let myself in for?!

Build Up

So the last report left off with things ticking along nicely and building up towards the Great South Run as a final pre event tune up. First curve ball... coming in the name of Storm Ashley and the resulting cancelation of the event... Luckily our friends at Liss Runners decided to brave the weather and a few brave triathletes tagged along to take on the elements around Longmoor ranges! Not quite what was planned but a fun day out nonetheless and some good mileage banked! Alongside this the final bits of work were being put in place on the swim and the bike, right up until curveball number 2.... A glorious traditional winter cold that hit me for six from about 2 weeks out from the race.... Focus shifted from training to smash it to just trying to get better to travel and make the start line. Not proud to admit but at points in the week before flying out serious consideration was being given as to whether to even bother taking the bike... Some last minute reassurance from both my parents and coach got my head back in the game and we jetted off to Dubai 4 days out from the race for a bit of acclimatisation, and with a new mindset to approach the race, shifting from pushing hard to compete and focusing more on enjoying the day and making sure to get to the finish line.

So Dubai, what a city to host an event like this in! Running between the sky scrapers along the waterfront, swimming in crystal clear, almost bath like seas and riding on purpose built closed road circuits was certainly a dream setup to get back moving again, see a little bit where the body was at. Going pro spotting became a bit fun game to keep entertained and getting to see the venue and the pros in action was even better! You think your a good swimmer or through T1 till you see the pro ladies in action blitzing it! With the bike dropped in transition and a slightly adjusted plan of attack in place the only thing to do now was go for it!

Race Day

First things first, it was an early one! to avoid the worst of the heat the AG field was being sent off from 6am, meaning it was pitch black at 4 am when the alarm went off for breakfast and to get down to the start along with the support crew! Kept things simple with Nutella and Banana on toast whilst the rest of the crew made me hungry preparing egg muffins to eat at the beach whilst waiting for the roads to reopen! Arrived at the aptly named sunrise beach to witness the sky turning orange before the sun began to rise over the downtime skyline and the Burj Khalifa that would provide the backdrop for a lot of the day. Strangely once arriving at the race site the nerves of overnight dissipated and I was back in the groove, the perks of having a fairly well drilled pre race routine by this point. With that, just before 6am the final briefing was made and we were called forward to the start pens, time to go!

Swim (2 km) - 33:35

Walking in to the start pens the main thought was to get towards the front and stay out of trouble. With the benfit of hidsight I may have overdone that instruction a tad! With athletes getting let off 6 at a time every 10 secs it wasn't long at all before I was at the front of the funnel and being released in to the water! Before the race I'd had hopes of pushing this part of the race hard to try and set myself up, however with water temps above 30 degrees Celsius and having seen the state of the pro's after their swim, where they were putting ice in their suits to try and cool off meant we adjusted to a more conservative approach. Fairly quickly off the beach I settled in to my swim groove and just tried to focus on spotting and my own form. Coming round to complete lap one I took advantage of the Aussie exit to cool off with some fresh water over the head before diving back in, straight in to what can only be described as a bun fight all the way to the turn point as we merged in with the slower swimmers on their first lap. Took the decision to stay wide at the turn to avoid the chaos and this seemed to pay off as I ended up with a much clearer approach to the beach exit. Exiting the water in 33:35 it certainly wasn't my finest swim of the year but we ticked most of the boxes, i'd stayed safe, out of the worst of the chaos and most importantly kept cool! Time for the fun part!

Bike (80 km) - 1:58:58

Time for the bit I'd been looking forward to! A fast flat closed road bike course comprising of a link section from sunrise beach in to 3 laps of an out and back circuit at the Maydan Horse Racing Track just outside of down town. Big fast roads, a great surface and plenty of opportunity to get your head down and keep the speed high! Transition was executed smoothly, although doing a long run across sand covered with carpet in bike cleats is not to be recommended and soon we were flying along! Again the priority was not so much on the outright speed or power on the day but about executing a solid all round race. This meant paying major attention to fueling, cooling and generally staying safe. It may have been an out and back course on big roads, but as the day went on and over 1500 athletes ended up congregating on the course it became rather busy! Power numbers were not the finest of my year by any means but the average speed was staying high and I was keeping my head up and being vocal to stay safe, who knew so many people could crash going in a straight line?! Aid stations proved to be an entertaining challenge, try swiping a bottle from the side of the road from a stationary marshal, dumping it over your head before disposing of it before the end of the littering zone, gives you a whole new appreciation for what the pro's achieve at much higher speeds! Overall this was a fun and entertaining sector of the race and the focus now switched to the days big challenge, the run!

Run (18 km) - 1:30:44

This was what all the setup work across the other two disciplines had been all about. Running has been my nemesis in these races every time I’ve taken on this kind of distance. We’d been working on my strength, robustness and endurance in the build up but I still had to put that in to practice on the day. With three short laps followed by a final longer lap the plan of attack was to settle in, focus on fuelling and cooling for the first few laps before pushing it a bit more for the final lap to the finish. Three aid stations on the course made this plan actually quite easy to execute! I maybe pushed on a bit hard after coming off the bike in a group before calming down and getting in to my own groove. Each aid station meant water and ice for cooling and taking advantage of any shade possible as we weaved our way around the grandstands, approaches and parking garages of the horse racing course. As I went on to the final lap I final found my support crew again, turned out I’d gotten round a bit quicker than they’d anticipated and they’d only just made it to Maydan from the swim site following the roads reopening. One lap, 5 km, that’s all I needed to execute to get home and finish the job. As you exit the main loop and start the run to the finish along the race courses back straight the noise of the crowds disappears and you enter your own little world. No shade to hide here and with a tail wind for the first time today the heat really starts to hit. Very glad to reach the unexpected aid station in front of the main horse racing grandstand and get some final cooling water and cheers from the volunteers before making the final push to the line. A few twists and turns, a cheekily steep ramp (one of the pro’s fell descending it later in the day) and I was back coming past transition to the finish line. Not gonna lie, this parts all then a bit of a blur, but the photos show I may have let the emotion out just a tad aha! Came in to the race not knowing if I’d even start, maybe with hopes of going sub 5 hours if all went well, looking up at the gantry to see 4:09:58 on the clock, beyond my wildest dreams!

Post Race and Reflections

First people to be spotted after the finish line, the top support team, my parents, sister and her partner who had tried their best to chase me around Dubai all day and who were going ever so slightly crazy at the line. Next order of duty, cooling off in an ice bath and generally taking it all in! Would have loved to stick around and watch the pro race after but by the time we’d picked my bike up and ready I was just too cooked! So back to the apartment and watching it on the TV it had to be, reflecting on one amazing experience and incredible day out on the race course.

I think this race really showcases one of the big points that I emphasised in the initial post, about flexibility, adaptability and generally getting yourself in a place mentally where you can accept any challenges in the lead up and roll with them. For anyone looking for something outside of the standard M dot branded events over these long distances I’d highly recommend a T100 event for people in 2025, they put on an amazing show and seeing the pro’s in action gives you a whole new perspective on this sport. It may not quite have been how I’d planned the build up to this race to go but the execution really embodies a phrase that I really love, “Only by seeking challenges can we hope to find the best in ourselves”.

So whatever challenges your lining up for 2025 we’d firstly like to wish all the Configure Carousel Component
The height of the carousel. The carousel generally works best when using units that are
relative to the width of the screen. So, for example, a height of 35vw means that the height of the
carousel is 35% of the width of the screen. This gives a constant aspect ratio of 10:3.5.
Default mode uses the central carousel configuration as defined from the settings area of the website.
Custom mode allows you to define a list of images to display just on this carousel.

Visibility
Usually, the display of member data is subject to the logged-in user having specific entitlements to view that data. By default,
this component will respect those entitlements and only show data that the user is allowed to see. However, in certain circumstances,
you may wish to remove these restrictions and, instead, rely on the permissions required to view the CMS page itself.
For example, when creating a "Meet the Committee" page, for viewing by members, you will probably need to disable the member data entitlements as
members would not normally have permission to view the personal details of committee members.
the usual member visibility restrictions WILL be applied.
The displayed list of members will be limited to those who the logged in user has permission to see.
Important: the usual member visibility restrictions WILL NOT be applied.
All of the members in the list will be displayed, regardless of the logged in user's permissions. Please ensure that the CMS space
has appropriate restrictions applied.
the usual member data visibility restrictions WILL be applied.
In addition, for contact details, only those that have been explicitly shared by the member will be visible; even if the viewing
member has elevated permissions.

The information you select below will only be visible to those who have the entitlements to view those particular fields for the particular
members displayed.
