Not sure I need to say much more but here we go!\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\u0022color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\u0022\u003eSarah Matthews, one of the longest standing members of PTC became World Champion at the Gran Fondo World Championships in Dundee, this week. She won the 60-64 individual women’s time trial. The Gran Fondo is the amateur competition for road racing and time trialling, and as with triathlon World Championships riders have to qualify to qualify. Gran Fond, means big race, and is run by UCI - the International Cycling Union so riders compete under their rules, the most challenging of which is the bike set up for which there are very strict rules about the position of the saddle, height of aero bars etc and every bike is measured on a special jig in the start area.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\u0022color: rgb(255, 255, 255);\u0022\u003eThe course this year was 22.5kms, out and back along one side of the A92 dual carriageway, east of Dundee with long, shallow undulations and nothing steeper than 2%. Many qualifiers and all the World Championships are done on closed roads. The course had much criticism as those of us that have raced in the Worlds before look forward to something that involves a degree of technical skill. As it happened there was a gusty wind on the return leg on the day so pacing was key. \u003cbr\u003eSarah said; ‘ The course was unbelievably fast on the way out thanks to a bit of a tailwind. Just before the turn my average speed was 28.2mph - the fastest 7 miles I think I’d ever ridden. It was very tempting to see if I could up it but keeping something in the tank to push hard into the headwind on the return was essential. The gusts were really challenging as every time I built my power up to push hard into the wind the gust eased off and I was building the power up again. I overtook quite a few of the riders that had started ahead of me then going into the first of two roundabouts in the last km I overtook a friend who set of 4 mins ahead of me. I could tell she was having a bad ride and even taking that into consideration I reckoned I was having quite a strong ride. When I crossed the line I knew I’d given all I\u0027d got, or as cyclists say ‘left it all out on the road’. Success at Duathlon saw her compete in the World Duathlon Championships in Pontevedra in 2014, then problems with running injuries forced her to pull out of the European Dualthlon Championships in April 2015. By that stage she’d done a couple of club time trials on the A3 as part of her training expecting to hate it but found the opposite so whilst unable to run spent the season time trialling and hasn’t looked back. She has tried to return to running a few times, even taking it steadily by doing couch to 10km but her old running injuries start to play 3rd and 8th in World Championships, been on the podium at various National races run on veterans handicap, won her age group in various National races and has a number of National age records at 10 and 15
