Well the start of this season threw that rule book out the window… what was looking likely to be a short build to the season due to the late finish last year, was then further compressed after managing to crack a rib during a ski trip in January! When the dust settled what it left me with was just over 2 months to try to build some volume and re-find the form for what might end up being the biggest racing block this year! Bookended by the first ever British Aquabike Chanpionships and my first attempt at an 100 mile time trial, the main event of the block was the European Middle Distance Aquabike Championships in Pamplona, Spain, and attempting to defend the European title I’d won last year.

Post injury I was actually able to get back on the bike on fairly short order, 30 - 40 min easy spins on the turbo became my norm from about the 3 week mark onwards for my sanity as much as the training benefits! However the real work and kick on point in the recovery and training came over the Easter period, during a training camp to the algarve in Portugal. By this point I’d only been back in the water and running for 2-3 weeks at most but it served as a major confidence booster that the engine was still there and that we’d go in to this block in a position to at least not embarrass myself.

British Aquabike Championships - Burghley House

First on the list was the British Aquabike Championships at Burghley House. Whilst not the largest field it had pulled together some of the best athletes from across the country to battle it out on the tight and technical course. A murky and busy swim course started out the day with a full on bunfight through the narrow start that only really calmed down after around 400 m or so. From there I tried to push on and find my own groove, coming out the water in 23:37 and heading out to go hunting on the bike, or as the case would turn out, to be hunted!

The bike course at Burghley is a rolling closed road two lap out and back affair. Running effectively 6 wide at points due to passing on both sides of the road the main skill deployed was being vocal in order to keep other riders from moving out on you!

Otherwise it was a case of putting the power down, staying aero and eyeballing the competition as you entered and exited the dead turns! Nerves increased as a result of a course recce drive, however turns out they shouldn’t have as we’d recce’d completely the wrong course! Eventually all the athletes were corralled in to transition to for the rolling start procedure, which was where the waiting started… in the midday sun… in full wetsuits… with such a large field and the aquabikers going off last meant that we had over half an hour waiting in transition before finally being called towards the lake and in to the water!

Whilst we’d been left a 3 min gap between the last triathletes going off and the first aquabikers that gap very quickly disappeared and it was in to passing mode for the majority of the swim! It turned in to a bit of a game of follow the feet in front and hope they are going roughly the right direction to get in the ball park before doing your own spotting to finally hit the target! Turning for home I tried to push on and kept moving through people before we hit the run out! Was very grateful to a kind Spanish spectator who chased me up the hill to return my watch that I’d accidentally dropped whilst faffing with my wetsuit release and then we were in to the change tent and on to the bike before you knew it! The first couple of laps felt good, I was holding position and speed nicely and keeping things controlled despite the gusty wind, lap 3 the burn started to kick in and as I entered lap 4 I’d realised maybe I’d bitted off more than I could chew, consciously taking the decision to dial back the power on the cross tailwind leg in a desperate attempt to salvage the ride. Turning back in to the wind again though it quickly became apparent that this was going to be a slog, and a battle to keep the bike upright… I’m not proud to admit that at some point on this leg the switch flicked in my head, and by the time I’d reached Chawton again I’d taken the decision to pull the plug and just roll things home, ending my first attempt at the distance with a DNF at the ~80 mile mark.

Upon returning to HQ it quickly became apparent that I wasn't the only one to have struggled, with nearly a third of the field a DNF or DNS. On the whole it had actually been a solid hit out, the fueling went well and I was well up on my previous best times over this kind of distance. Configure Carousel Component
The height of the carousel. The carousel generally works best when using units that are
relative to the width of the screen. So, for example, a height of 35vw means that the height of the
carousel is 35% of the width of the screen. This gives a constant aspect ratio of 10:3.5.
Default mode uses the central carousel configuration as defined from the settings area of the website.
Custom mode allows you to define a list of images to display just on this carousel.

Visibility
Usually, the display of member data is subject to the logged-in user having specific entitlements to view that data. By default,
this component will respect those entitlements and only show data that the user is allowed to see. However, in certain circumstances,
you may wish to remove these restrictions and, instead, rely on the permissions required to view the CMS page itself.
For example, when creating a "Meet the Committee" page, for viewing by members, you will probably need to disable the member data entitlements as
members would not normally have permission to view the personal details of committee members.
the usual member visibility restrictions WILL be applied.
The displayed list of members will be limited to those who the logged in user has permission to see.
Important: the usual member visibility restrictions WILL NOT be applied.
All of the members in the list will be displayed, regardless of the logged in user's permissions. Please ensure that the CMS space
has appropriate restrictions applied.
the usual member data visibility restrictions WILL be applied.
In addition, for contact details, only those that have been explicitly shared by the member will be visible; even if the viewing
member has elevated permissions.
the usual member data visibility restrictions WILL be applied.
The information you select below will only be visible to those who have the entitlements to view those particular fields for the particular
members displayed.
Important: the usual member data visibility restrictions WILL NOT be applied.
The information you select below will be visible to anybody who has visibility of the CMS page containing this widget. Please ensure that the CMS space
