But even coming from me I think these two are taking the biscuit! Two of our newest members of the club, Freddie and Jamie, joining from very different sporting backgrounds, and both deciding to throw themselves in to long distance racing, in Freddies case as his first ever triathlon! So sit back, grab a brew and enjoy, as we join Freddie and Jamie as they take the step in to the unknown, cause on things for sure, this ones going to be a long one!

Jamie:

So yeah got to throw out all the thanks, first to Leighton for the training plan that was essential is making it to the start line and then the club swims and rides for making it all a little less daunting and of course you (Josh) for the kit I wore during the race!

The whole event was great, incredibly well run with people everywhere who could point us to where we needed to be and what we needed to do.
The emails had said we should be there for a specific check in time but getting in early made things easier and just walked through in a few minutes, after that kit was separated into three bags, swim-bike for the kit you’ll need in transition 1, bike-run for the kit you’ll need in T2 and then dry kit, for after it’s all done.
Now I’m not exactly the most prepared of people, I love to train, but when it comes to racing I’m just the type to wing it. So I was there with my very basic kit in these bags, hanging in the transition tent and wandering down to the start line with a few hundred other people in orange hats.
Jumping into the lake and trying to get as close to the front as possible, whilst still having the space to swim (not an easy judgement when knowing that I’m not going to be in the top 5% (Freddie)

The swim was surprisingly nice, a simple up and back, wetsuits were optional so everybody wore them. I stuck to the right hand side on the way up the lake and then back down again to keep out of the main pack and avoid the accidental collisions that were almost constant at the start. Always you could see a sign ahead or behind saying the distance you were from the end of the lake so you could figure out how far into the swim you are.
Getting out on a ramp was nice and easy, little bit of a traffic jam as it goes down to single file while people are still unsteady on their feet but that didn’t last more than a few seconds.

Into T1 where we’d had a walk through the day before and hung our own kit out ready. Grabbed the first bag and tipped it all onto the floor, wetsuit off, helmet and padded shorts on and we’re running for the bike to get going.

Now adrenaline was making me move a little too fast for the start of the ride, ten k in and going about 12kph faster than intended I found somebody going the right pace and started chatting, both to make the time go faster and to slow me down. Thankfully it took the marshals around 5 hours before they were telling me off for drafting (despite being side by side). Now this confused me at the time, but I’ve read the rules and turns out it’s not allowed, even if it’s not really drafting. So off I went on my own again for the last 20 miles or so where of course I got a flat tyre costing me around 7 minutes as the new tyres were tight! A short while later I’m back in transition where the staff will re-rack your bike for you, ditching my second bag onto the ground containing a small bottle of Lucozade and my old scruffy running shoes that Ro loves to hate. A quick change and off out for a slow steady plod . The feed stations here were giving out all sorts, the gels with / without caffeine, bananas, oranges, water high 5 (electrolyte drink) and coke, and we would pass the feed stations four times on the four long laps or three times on the short lap at the end to make up the marathon distance in (for me) a little less than 5 hours of plodding

Now across the finish line there were ambulance crews helping to give out the medals and checking people over just in case. But at this stage all I felt was tired. Straight back to transition to pick up stuff and bike to load onto the car. And that’s where things got weird. I attempted to walk back to the finish line to check on my cycling buddy who wasn’t too far behind me. But after a short walk I felt myself hyperventilating, shivering with pins and needles and with a numb tongue. So I figured I should just go back to the car and get myself driven to the hotel for food and a bath before bed.

Freddie:

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of taking on the Outlaw Triathlon in Nottingham, and I'm delighted to share my report with the club.

The journey began with an early 6am start on Saturday. I travelled with my brother, who was also competing, and it was great to have a partner in crime for the long drive to Nottingham. We arrived with plenty of time to register, attend the first race briefing at 11am, and familiarise ourselves with the venue. The registration and briefing were exceptionally well-organised, and it was a great chance to get any last-minute questions answered. Seeing a familiar face in the form of Jamie Mansfield as we dropped off our bikes at transition was a huge bonus!

After racking our bikes and catching up with Jamie on his prep, we made a quick trip into Nottingham for some last-minute carb bars before heading to our AirBnB for an early supper and an even earlier bedtime.

Race morning arrived with a 4am wake-up call, and a less-than-appetising breakfast was quickly followed by a mix of nervous excitement. We arrived on-site around 5:10am, and the atmosphere was fantastic. The volunteers were incredibly friendly and helpful, making the early morning logistics a breeze. The organisers mentioned that numbers were down this year to around 500 people, but the start area still felt buzzing with energy. The start was well-organised, and I managed to get near the front, settling into a rhythm for the remainder of the swim. The water was remarkably clean thanks to newly installed purification devices, and the swim passed by reasonably quickly, finishing in about 55 minutes. My wetsuit, however, proved a little less cooperative in transition, making for a rather leisurely start to the bike leg!

The bike course started with a loop of the lake before heading out into the Nottinghamshire countryside. It was still cloudy and a perfect temperature for riding. Despite not feeling much like eating, I forced down a carb bar and found some spectacular views on the empty roads. The three-loop course included two well-stocked feed stations and a massive crowd at the Caffe Velo Verde, all of which provided a significant boost. The first 150km felt strong, but the final 30km was a real struggle, made all the more challenging when my brother cruised past me!

Finishing the bike without any mechanical issues was a huge relief. The run, a five-loop course, was brilliant as it meant you were constantly surrounded by people—both competitors and spectators—offering support. Although my pace gradually declined, the friendly faces of volunteers and fellow triathletes kept me going.

Crossing the finish line just before 6pm was a moment of pure exhaustion and relief. The finishing area was superbly equipped with food, massages, and even non-alcoholic beer. I can thoroughly recommend the event to any first-time full-distance triathletes. The organisers truly prioritised the athlete experience, and spectators were also well-catered for, creating a genuinely enjoyable and supportive atmosphere. It's a fantastic event, and I'm looking forward to a much-needed
